Planning a Two-Week Sri Lanka Itinerary: What Actually Works

Fly into Colombo, transfer to Dambulla or Habarana (3 to 4 hours). Use this as a base for Sigiriya Rock, Polonnaruwa ruins, and Dambulla Cave Temple. Three days gives you time to visit without rushing and to enjoy the hotel pool in the afternoon heat. Days 4 to 5: Kandy. Drive south to Kandy (2 to 3 hours). Visit the Temple of the Tooth, walk the botanical gardens, and explore the town market. Kandy is best enjoyed at a relaxed pace. One full day plus two half-days is ideal. Days 6 to 8: Hill Country. Take the famous train from Kandy to Ella (6 hours, book first class in advance or enjoy the open doors of second class). Spend two full days in Ella hiking Little Adam's Peak, visiting Nine Arch Bridge at sunrise, and eating at the small cafes along the main road. Days 9 to 10: Yala Region. Drive down from the hills to Tissamaharama (4 hours). Take an early morning and late afternoon safari in Yala National Park. Two game drives give you strong odds for leopard, elephant, and bear sightings. Days 11 to 13: South Coast. Continue along the coast to Tangalle, Mirissa, or Unawatuna (2 to 3 hours). Surf, snorkel, eat seafood, visit Galle Fort. This is your decompression time. Do not over-plan these days. Day 14: Return to Colombo. Drive back (2 to 3 hours from Galle) or take the expressway. A final night in Colombo lets you explore the city's restaurants and catch an early flight the next morning. The key principle: no more than one major transfer day in a row.
